– Keep colors light. Light colors such as a neutral white and apple crisp brighten the kitchen, instantly giving it an illusion of added space.

– Make the sink smaller. While many homes have the traditional 12-foot long sink-and-counter-top combo, a small kitchen does not have that luxury. Sequester the sink in a small area to free up space for other uses such as food preparation.

– Push up cabinets. Go all the way to the ceiling with kitchen cabinets. Eye-level cabinets occupy too much space in small kitchens. By raising them higher, homeowners can realize the dual benefits of more storage for less eye-level space. Similarly, opt for slim-line refrigerators that are taller rather than wider.

– Pick large tiles. Larger tiles make small kitchens look larger. It’s a visual illusion. Go for tiles larger than the standard 12 by 12 inches. For narrow galley kitchens, however, the standard is suitable.

– Choose an open floor plan. Open up the kitchen to the living room or dining room. This may involve knocking down walls but will definitely give the illusion of space.
